Steph Roulic, Founder & CEO at Startup Boston
Stephanie Roulic, Founder & CEO at Startup Boston, joins The Lantern to share what’s coming up with Startup Boston Week (September 8th - 12th!) and what she’s excited about as an upcoming judge for Techstars Boston Weekend..
Welcome Stephanie Roulic, Founder & CEO at Startup Boston on this episode of 🔥The Lantern 🔥
Startup Boston Week is taking place from September 8th - 12th this fall. It’s free…so don’t miss it!
Shweta Agrawal from Boston New Technology (BNT) joins Steph & I to discuss the upcoming Techstars Startup Weekend Boston (May 30th - June 1st). Steph will be an expert judge at the final competition on Sunday evening where teams will compete for prizes after almost 48 hours of building.
🔍 What’s going on inside Startup Boston this spring / summer of 2025? 🔎
Startup Boston’s organization is constantly creating different events that support the startup community. They connect groups of individuals for networking and orgs like startup accelerators so founders know what resources are available to them throughout Boston & New England.
On June 4th they’re hosting a mentor exchange for first time founders, connecting them with mentors.
Look out for another co-founder matching event this summer before Startup Boston week too!
🤔 What does Steph want to see from Techstars Startup Weekend teams? 🤔
She wants to see startups that are pinpointing a problem within a specific industry. Work to clearly identify a problem and need that an industry faces, showing a path to product market fit!
🤔 What has Steph learned from her startup career founding a company, scaling Goldcast, Startup Boston & beyond? 🤔
Seek advice for things you don’t know from talented peers. It’s a very valuable asset to have as a founder (or builder). You don’t need to know everything, but you do need to know where to go to find the answers.
Pinpoint your weak spots and go learn from others that are stronger in those areas!
🤝 How can we help? 🤝
Go check out Techstars Startup Weekend (May 30th - June 1st) and, based on everything you learn, bring it to Startup Boston Week on September 8th!
Alex Hammerman, Senior Engineering Program Manager at WHOOP
Welcome Alex Hammerman, Senior Engineering Program Manager at WHOOP, on this episode of 🔥The Lantern 🔥
WHOOP is a wearables device company founded in 2012, built over the last decade plus from a single device into a comprehensive health & wellness platform.
Through their hardware & software offerings, WHOOP helps athletes and high performers better optimize their performance.
Alex was brought in as the second member of the hardware program management team, running the hardware program that became the WHOOP 5.0 and the WHOOP Basic Charger.
🔍 What’s going on inside WHOOP in 2025? 🔎
It has been a big 2025! WHOOP has transformed from a single hardware product set company to a multi device platform.
They released two new sensors - WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG - with two new chargers (the wireless power back and the basic charger). It’s been a crazy year and a half from prototype to launch!
The member base has (of course) been growing a lot too!
🤔 What has Alex learned from his startup career & building WHOOP? 🤔
Alex has worked in medical devices, internet hardware & infrastructure, and EV charging. He’s never worked in true consumer electronics (until now).
High volume products like WHOOP are a totally different game! The precision & speed needed are very different.
Form factor is a big consideration. Fitting all that technology into a WHOOP, where each millimeter matters, was a major lesson in precision.
Despite all of those challenges, hardware development is a lot more translatable than people make it out to be. There can be a lot of merit to jumping industries and taking those learnings across industries too!
🤝 How can we help? 🤝
Boston is one of the hotbeds for hardware and deep tech in the entire world. Alex wants to see more of that industry grow here in Boston - more hardware events for founders & operators - to help us thrive locally.
And for WHOOP? Try them out! There are 3 different subscription tiers with a 30 day free trial option. What does your health mean to you? What does longevity mean to you? Sign up and try it out!
Any feedback for me? One thing you liked? One thing you didn’t? Local startups, founders, or operators to highlight? Just reply to this e-mail!
See you next week!
-Matt
